BREAKING: Cedar Park High School’s standout, Joy Udoye, has been honored as the 2025 Central Texas Player of the Year, as confirmed by the American-Statesman. This recognition comes after an explosive season where she led the Timberwolves to victory in the Class 5A Division II state championship, boasting jaw-dropping statistics of 581 kills, 364 digs, 34 aces, and 30 blocks.
This prestigious title marks a significant milestone in Udoye’s career, as she continues to impress on the court while still completing her senior year at Cedar Park. With a remarkable overall record of 39-12, Udoye’s contributions were pivotal in her team’s success, demonstrating skills that many believe are suited for the collegiate level.
“I’ve always had the goal of winning state, and we brought that mindset into every practice,” Udoye stated, reflecting on her team’s determination. Her efforts throughout the season have not only showcased her talent but have also solidified her place as one of the best in an area rich with volleyball talent.
Udoye, who has committed to play at Stanford, has been recognized as a two-time first-team All-Central Texas player and was instrumental in leading Cedar Park to a state runner-up finish last year. This year, her performance peaked at just the right moment, according to Lori McLaughlin, Cedar Park’s head coach. “This was the best version of Joy that I witnessed,” McLaughlin said. “Her hard work over the last four years really shone through.”
As a six-rotation player, Udoye exemplified versatility, contributing significantly in passing, blocking, and serving. Her athleticism and height give her a competitive edge, making her a formidable opponent on the court. Despite a slight drop in overall stats compared to last year, she maintained an impressive average of over four kills per set with a hitting percentage of 26.1%.
“This season has been about consistency for me,” Udoye expressed. “Every kill feels so rewarding. I thrive on the competitiveness of volleyball; it’s my escape.”
Joy’s journey in sports has been shaped by her family, as she grew up surrounded by three older brothers who also played athletics. “Being around them brought out a different side of my personality,” she remarked. Her coach first noticed Udoye’s potential at a volleyball camp when she was just in sixth grade, and less than three years later, she was starting as a freshman.
“Winning the state title still feels surreal,” Udoye said, recalling the triumphant moment that capped off her stellar season. “It was incredible to win with such a close-knit team and to have strong connections with my setters and teammates.”
As the volleyball community celebrates Udoye’s achievements, all eyes will be on her as she prepares for the next chapter at Stanford. This recognition not only highlights her individual talent but also inspires young athletes across Central Texas to strive for greatness.
