Camden Hills Wins First-Ever State Football Championship, 52-26

UPDATE: In a historic showdown, the Camden Hills Windjammers clinched their first-ever state football championship with a decisive 52-26 victory over Spruce Mountain on November 15, 2023, at Edward Little High School. The Windjammers, led by senior quarterback Hollis Schwalm, dominated the game and celebrated their groundbreaking achievement at midfield.

The excitement was palpable as the Windjammers showcased an offensive clinic, scoring multiple touchdowns and forcing five turnovers against the South Division champions. “This is the stuff you dream about since you’re six years old,” said junior player Braden Beveridge, who contributed significantly with a touchdown and two interceptions. “It’s amazing to see it all come together.”

Camden Hills, finishing the season with an impressive 10-1 record, started strong, taking an early lead of 8-0 after the first quarter. Schwalm was a standout, rushing for three touchdowns and throwing for another, accounting for 32 of the team’s 52 points. “As long as I get the ball in his hands, something good is going to happen,” said head coach Chris Christie.

The Windjammers scored a flurry of touchdowns in the first half, heading into the locker room with a commanding 32-12 lead. Despite Spruce Mountain’s efforts, including a touchdown from Dylan Jewett, they could not close the gap. Coach Christie praised his team’s heart and determination, stating, “They just weren’t going to be denied today.”

In the second half, Camden Hills kept the pressure on, with additional rushing touchdowns from Beveridge, Ethan Dingle, and Ben Hoffman. The defense continued to shine, forcing more turnovers and limiting Spruce Mountain’s scoring opportunities. The final score secured Camden Hills’ place in history as the first state football champions for the school.

This remarkable victory is a testament to the growth of the Camden Hills football program, which has come a long way since becoming a full-fledged varsity team in 2009. The Windjammers only recently found their footing after overcoming several challenges, including a canceled season in 2015 due to player safety concerns.

As the team reflects on their journey, they are not just celebrating a championship but also laying the groundwork for future success. “We checked our egos and really started playing together as a team,” Coach Christie noted, emphasizing the promising future for Camden Hills football.

With this championship win, the Windjammers can now proudly hang their banner in the school’s gymnasium, marking a new era of achievement for Camden Hills. The community is buzzing with pride, and players are eager to share their journey with future generations.

The Windjammers’ remarkable season saw them outscore opponents 292-154 during the regular season and 134-26 in the playoffs, showcasing their strength and determination on the field. Fans are already looking forward to next season, eager to see what this talented team will accomplish.
