URGENT UPDATE: Brian Ortega’s anticipated move to the lightweight division has been postponed once more due to injuries. The former featherweight title challenger, now holding a record of 16-5, announced on Friday that he will withdraw from his bout against Renato Moicano (20-7-1) scheduled for March 7, 2024, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Ortega, 34, has been vocal about his desire to transition to lightweight for over a year, but persistent injuries and unexpected opportunities in the featherweight category have hindered his plans. “I’m OK, health is good, no surgeries or nothing crazy like that,” Ortega stated on Instagram. “But I do need to take a little time off to nurse these injuries.”
The fighter expressed frustration over the situation, emphasizing that while his condition isn’t severe, he needs to prioritize recovery through rest and physical therapy. Ortega’s previous attempts to shift divisions included a planned fight against Diego Lopes at UFC 303 in June, which he had to withdraw from due to complications during his weight cut.
In August, Ortega faced Aljamain Sterling in a featherweight matchup, despite being hospitalized during his weight management process. This latest delay adds to a series of setbacks as Ortega aims to establish himself in the lightweight division.
Currently, the UFC has not announced a replacement for Moicano for UFC 326. Fans and followers eagerly await news on Ortega’s recovery and potential future matchups as he seeks to rebound from these challenges. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
