UPDATE: A 74-year-old Bay Area mother, Ellen Orcutt, tragically lost her life in a head-on collision just down the street from her home in San Jose on October 25. The incident occurred on Foxworthy Avenue, leaving family and friends in mourning as they remember her legacy.
Orcutt was struck by an SUV whose driver reportedly attempted to overtake another vehicle, crossing into oncoming traffic. The impact was devastating, causing both vehicles to flip over. Tragically, the driver of the SUV also succumbed to their injuries shortly after the crash. Initial police reports suggest that alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.
“My heart is shattered,” said Joelle Orlando, Orcutt’s daughter. “I just lost my best friend and my guiding light in this world.” Joelle emphasized that she wants her mother remembered for her life, not her tragic death. “Her life was beautiful,” she stated.
Orcutt dedicated over 25 years to working as a social worker for Pacific Clinics, a nonprofit providing behavioral and mental health services. Her colleagues described her as the “resource queen,” known for bringing supplies like hygiene kits and clothes to families in need. “She dealt with families facing the most difficult situations with compassion and strength,” said Greg Yoder, a family friend for over 32 years.
Andrew Ford, a coworker at Pacific Clinics, reflected on Orcutt’s calming presence, stating, “In a chaotic world, people like Ellen reminded us that we are all going to be okay.”
In a recent email shared by her coworkers, Orcutt urged her colleagues to “keep hope alive” and to appreciate the stories of those they serve. “May you all be thankful and with hope for yourselves and those families that come into your life,” Orcutt wrote.
As the community grapples with this tragic loss, Joelle Orlando expressed her desire to honor her mother’s mission: “Cherish every moment, because you never know when it’s going to be taken.”
