Authorities Arrest Man for Trafficking Missing Teen in Oakland

URGENT UPDATE: A 17-year-old girl, identified in court records as “Jane Doe,” has been rescued after being reported missing for approximately six weeks. Her images were discovered on a sex trafficking website, prompting Oakland police to take immediate action.

On November 13, 2023, detectives went undercover, responding to an online advertisement linked to the case. According to authorities, they posed as potential buyers and arranged to meet the teen at a hotel located on the 1800 block of Embarcadero in Oakland. When Jane Doe arrived, she was accompanied by a 31-year-old man, later identified as Melvin Williams, who was driving a white Tesla.

Evidence gathered by police reveals alarming details. Williams allegedly communicated with Jane Doe over 1,500 times through her phone. Disturbingly, he was saved in her contacts as “Daddy,” and arranged to provide her with condoms. Investigators found a photo on her phone of Williams in the Tesla, brandishing wads of cash, further implicating him in trafficking activities.

Court records reveal that Doe had even texted Williams asking for permission to use the restroom, highlighting the controlling nature of their relationship. Following the undercover operation, authorities arrested Williams and charged him with three felonies: human trafficking, pandering, and soliciting a minor into prostitution.

Despite these serious accusations, Williams was released from custody shortly after his arrest on November 13 and has not been re-arrested to date. The formal charges were filed on November 25, as the investigation continues. Williams has three prior convictions from Los Angeles County, although his current city of residence remains undisclosed.

Before her disappearance, Jane Doe was last seen in Southern California, raising concerns about her welfare. The Oakland Police Department continues to urge anyone with information regarding this case to come forward.

This developing story highlights the urgent need for vigilance against human trafficking and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals. Stay tuned for updates as officials work to ensure the safety of those affected.
