BREAKING: The Ada-Borup-West Cougars have advanced to the Minnesota Section 8A championship after a decisive victory over Red Lake Falls, sweeping the match 25-17, 25-10, 25-12 in Crookston, Minnesota, on Tuesday night. Star player Malayna Syverson showcased her talent with an impressive 22 kills, including 10 kills in the first set alone, leading her team with authority.
The Cougars, now with a record of 22-8, are set to face East Grand Forks Sacred Heart in the section championship this Friday at 7 p.m. in Crookston. Notably, Ada-Borup-West handed Sacred Heart its only loss of the season earlier this year, making this upcoming matchup highly anticipated.
Syverson, a towering 6-foot-4 middle blocker committed to North Dakota State, emphasized the importance of teamwork in her post-match interview. “We just have to put a lot of effort in,” she stated on Your Live Event. “We’ve built as a team since the Sacred Heart matchup, and so have they. We’ll lock in and practice and get to the game.”
Red Lake Falls, which had previously knocked off the defending section champion Kittson County Central, concludes its season with a strong record of 24-7. The Cougars showed resilience, battling through nine ties in the opening set before Syverson’s performance helped them secure momentum.
“I think right away we came out with some nerves,” Syverson noted. “If you’re not nervous, something’s wrong. We pulled it together and built some momentum.” Alongside Syverson, teammate Morgan Engel, also committed to NDSU, contributed significantly with 14 kills.
The Cougars set the pace early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the second set and never trailing thereafter. They continued the momentum into the third set, quickly distancing themselves from their opponents.
