Philips Hue Launches SpatialAware Feature for Enhanced Lighting

Signify has unveiled a new feature for its Philips Hue smart lighting line called Hue SpatialAware, designed to enhance the way users experience lighting scenes in their homes. This innovative feature utilizes an algorithm along with a smartphone scan to determine the spatial relationship between Hue lights, thereby allowing for the creation of cohesive lighting environments without complex setup processes.

During a demonstration at CES 2026, attendees witnessed firsthand how the Hue app employs a smartphone camera to recognize the positions of various lights in a room. By scanning the area, users can easily configure their Hue lights, whether they are installed overhead, on the floor, or on shelves, to create scenes that flow seamlessly from the floor to the ceiling. The technology relies on the phone’s camera, and while it is compatible with devices lacking a LiDAR scanner, users must tag each light from multiple angles to accurately triangulate their locations.

Once the lights are anchored within the app, users can activate a specific scene by tapping an icon featuring a star beneath the scene’s thumbnail. The results can be visually striking, especially in scenes designed to mimic natural phenomena like sunsets, which feature vibrant oranges and pinks. Alternatively, the app can create subtler settings, such as an “Energize” scene that simulates daylight by adjusting the color temperature based on the elevation of the light in the room. While the effect may not replicate the outdoors entirely, it offers a brightness that some may find overwhelming in a single room.

SpatialAware is set to be available in spring 2026, enhancing the Philips Hue experience for users looking to create dynamic lighting environments. In addition to this new feature, Signify announced that its Hue Secure cameras will now integrate with Apple Home, allowing users to access live feeds and footage through the Hue app. However, this integration will not support full HomeKit Secure capabilities, meaning users will not receive free recordings saved to iCloud.

Furthermore, Signify introduced a cloud-based AI assistant within the Hue app, enabling users to automate their lighting systems easily. For instance, during the demonstration, a representative instructed the assistant to turn off all lights at midnight, showcasing the assistant’s capability to handle automation requests. Unlike the Google Home feature that launched last year, this AI assistant is available at no additional cost to Philips Hue users.

As the smart home industry continues to evolve, Philips Hue’s integration of innovative technology like SpatialAware underscores the brand’s commitment to enhancing user experiences in home lighting. With new features expected to roll out soon, Philips Hue is poised to remain a leader in the smart lighting sector.
