WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu has become the latest victim in a series of high-profile burglaries targeting professional athletes. On Monday night, her home in Los Angeles was broken into, marking a troubling trend that has seen several prominent sports figures experience similar incidents.
According to reports from TMZ, the burglary occurred while Ionescu, 28, and her husband, former NFL player Hroniss Grasu, were away from the residence. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) responded to a call at approximately 20:00 to investigate the incident.
Two suspects allegedly used a tool to shatter the back door glass, gaining entry into the home. Once inside, they ransacked the property, taking various items before fleeing the scene in an unidentified vehicle. While the police have not confirmed the exact contents of the stolen items, NBC reported that the thieves made off with luxury handbags valued at over $60,000.
This incident adds Ionescu to a growing list of athletes who have recently faced similar intrusions. Other notable victims include Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Joe Burrow, and Becky Lynch. Most notably, Jeffrey Simmons of the Tennessee Titans returned from a game in San Francisco to discover his back window had been smashed, revealing a troubling trend targeting athletes’ homes.
Ionescu and Grasu, who celebrated their marriage in March 2024, both have roots in Romania but are natives of California. Ionescu has made a significant impact in the world of basketball, being selected as the first overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft. She captured the WNBA championship in 2024 and also earned Olympic gold with Team USA in the same year.
As the LAPD continues its investigation into the burglary, the safety of high-profile athletes and their homes remains a pressing concern. The growing number of burglaries suggests that further measures may be needed to protect these individuals from targeted criminal activity.
