Ty Simpson Praises Browns’ Monken, Despite Draft Speculation

Ty Simpson, the Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback, recently expressed admiration for the Cleveland Browns’ new head coach, Todd Monken, despite indications that the team may not select him in the upcoming NFL Draft. Multiple reports suggest that the Browns are unlikely to use their first-round picks, No. 6 and No. 24, on Simpson, yet he remains optimistic about the connection he has with Monken.

During an appearance on the FanDuel TV program “Up & Adams,” Simpson emphasized the strong relationship he shares with Monken, who previously recruited him while serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Georgia. “He’s the man,” Simpson remarked, according to Chris Franklin of NJ Advance Media. He noted their long-standing acquaintance, mentioning, “I got to meet with them at the combine, and I got to meet with them on a visit with the Browns.”

Draft Dynamics and Team Strategy

Despite Simpson’s enthusiasm, Browns insider Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland has pointed out that the decision-making power regarding draft picks rests with general manager Andrew Berry, not Monken. The Browns appear focused on developing their current quarterbacks, including veteran Deshaun Watson and rookie Shedeur Sanders, for the upcoming season. Considering the situation, selecting a quarterback with what some analysts describe as “questionable first-round talent” may not align with the team’s strategic goals.

Simpson further highlighted Monken’s coaching prowess, stating, “He wants to take the league by storm with his offense.” He praised Monken for his genuine care for players and coaches, and noted the success of Monken’s offensive strategies, particularly during his tenure with the Georgia Bulldogs and his work with Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. Under Monken’s guidance, Jackson secured his second regular-season Most Valuable Player Award in 2023.

With the NFL Draft set for April 23, 2026, the landscape could shift as teams finalize their strategies. For now, it appears that Simpson’s aspirations to play under Monken may not materialize, given the current trajectory of the Browns’ roster decisions and draft plans.
