Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin expressed optimism regarding the availability of wide receiver DK Metcalf for the upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins on December 11, 2023. Metcalf’s health came into question after he spent a night in a Baltimore hospital following the Steelers’ recent victory over the New Orleans Saints, where he recorded a season-high 148 yards on seven receptions.
During his weekly news conference on Tuesday, Tomlin noted that Metcalf’s condition is improving. “He’s moving in the right direction,” he said. “I don’t think it’s going to jeopardize his availability at all, but it certainly may jeopardize his availability at the early portions of the week from a practice standpoint.” Tomlin praised the medical staff for their swift response in ensuring Metcalf’s safety postgame.
Metcalf experienced stomach pains after the game, prompting medical personnel to remove him from the team flight. Tomlin explained that Metcalf had received basic over-the-counter remedies during the game, but his condition worsened afterward, leading to the precautionary hospital visit. “We just exercised an abundance of caution,” Tomlin stated, emphasizing that the team wanted to fully understand Metcalf’s situation before allowing him to travel.
Injury Concerns for Other Players
While Metcalf is likely to play against a Dolphins defense that has limited opponents to an average of just 13.3 points per game in their last four victories, the Steelers face uncertainty regarding several other players. Tight end Darnell Washington, offensive tackle Andrus Peat, and linebacker Malik Harrison are currently in concussion protocol. Additionally, cornerback James Pierre (calf) and defensive lineman Keeanu Benton (ankle) may be restricted in practice due to injuries sustained during the game.
Tomlin mentioned that safety Kyle Dugger has a “chance” to return after missing the last game due to a hand injury. The status of first-round draft pick Derrick Harmon (knee), who has not played in the last two contests, remains uncertain, with Tomlin indicating that Harmon’s practice participation will determine his availability.
Given the growing list of injuries, Tomlin opted to give the Steelers (7-6) an extra day off on Wednesday to allow players additional recovery time before resuming practice on Thursday. “We just deemed it appropriate to give ourselves another additional 24 hours of recovery this week,” Tomlin explained, underscoring the importance of rest as the team prepares for the crucial Monday Night Football matchup against the Dolphins.
As the Steelers aim to maintain momentum in their playoff push, the outcome of this game could have significant implications for their postseason aspirations. Metcalf’s potential return, along with the recovery of other key players, will be closely monitored as the team approaches the weekend.
