The 19th annual Coaches Choice USA Staten Island vs. New Jersey Challenge will take place on March 10, 2024, at Moore Catholic High School in Graniteville, Staten Island. This event promises an exciting lineup of five games, showcasing local high school basketball talent.
This year, the challenge features a notable twist. The second game of the day will see Staten Island Academy facing Bound Brook, and both teams will be led by head coaches who hold the prestigious Jaques Award. Sandy Litkenhaus, who earned the award following the 1986-87 season, is in her first year coaching Staten Island Academy. Her counterpart, Jen Derenjanik, is one of only two three-time winners of the award, having led her teams to victory from 1998 to 2000. Derenjanik is entering her 12th season at the helm of Bound Brook.
Both coaches share a connection to the now-defunct St. Peter’s Girls High School, where they honed their skills as players before embarking on their successful coaching careers. The event has become a highlight for local basketball enthusiasts, largely due to the efforts of former Islander and St. John Villa varsity coach James Martinos, who has played a key role in organizing the challenge.
The schedule for the day is packed with competitive matchups. The games will kick off with Tottenville facing Spotswood at 11:00 a.m. The action continues with Staten Island Academy against Bound Brook at 12:30 p.m., followed by Notre Dame Academy competing against Mount St. Mary at 14:05. St. Joseph by-the-Sea will take on East Brunswick at 15:45, and the final game of the day features Moore Catholic facing Snyder at 17:20.
Fans are encouraged to attend and support their teams, as the event not only highlights local basketball talent but also fosters community spirit and camaraderie among schools. The Staten Island vs. New Jersey Challenge remains a celebration of high school sports, showcasing the hard work and dedication of athletes, coaches, and supporters alike.
