The Baltimore Ravens are clarifying their offseason priorities as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season. At the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, general manager Eric DeCosta and head coach Jesse Minter discussed the team’s strategies to address key challenges, including the future of quarterback Lamar Jackson and improvements to their defensive line.
One of the most pressing issues is Jackson’s contract, which is expected to impose a substantial salary cap hit of $74.5 million in 2026. This figure is the second-highest in the league, trailing only Deshaun Watson of the Cleveland Browns. Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti expressed his desire for Jackson to remain with the team, emphasizing the urgency for a resolution before free agency begins on March 9, 2024.
DeCosta confirmed ongoing discussions with Jackson, stating, “I have spoken to Lamar about a lot of different things over the last month. He’s been very engaged.” While he acknowledged the challenges of Jackson’s cap number, DeCosta assured fans that it would not hinder the team’s ability to make significant roster improvements. “We feel like we can start at the beginning of the new league year and conduct business,” he said.
Focus on Retaining Tyler Linderbaum
Another significant offseason goal is to secure center Tyler Linderbaum for the long term. DeCosta revealed that the Ravens have made a “market-setting offer” to Linderbaum, recognizing his vital role in the team’s offensive strategy. “Tyler is a guy that I have tremendous respect for,” DeCosta noted.
Minter echoed this sentiment, stating, “He’s one of the best interior linemen in the league. He’s a major piece of our offense.” The Ravens are not expected to use the franchise or transition tag on Linderbaum, who was a first-round pick in 2022. As one of 19 pending free agents, retaining Linderbaum is crucial for maintaining offensive continuity, especially under new offensive coordinator Declan Doyle.
Linderbaum’s potential contract could surpass the current highest-paid center, Creed Humphrey, whose recent extension averages $18 million annually. The Ravens are determined to ensure Linderbaum remains a cornerstone of their offensive line.
Strengthening the Pass Rush
The Ravens’ defensive pass rush is another area requiring significant improvement. Last season, the team recorded just 30 sacks, placing them among the bottom tier in the league. DeCosta acknowledged the team’s need to enhance their defensive capabilities, particularly following the loss of defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike to a season-ending injury.
“We certainly know that we have to augment the pass rush and improve there,” DeCosta stated. With 11 draft picks available, the Ravens have the opportunity to strengthen their defensive front through the draft, which is noted for its depth in pass rush talent this year.
Minter highlighted the importance of a strong pass rush, referencing recent Super Bowl winners. “How have these teams won that final game? It’s an O-line and D-line driven league,” he pointed out. The Ravens’ strategy will involve leveraging both the draft and free agency to bolster their defensive lineup.
The Ravens are also committed to maintaining a disciplined and flexible approach in their draft strategy. DeCosta emphasized the importance of blending traditional scouting with advanced analytics to evaluate prospects. This method allows the Ravens to prioritize the best available talent while addressing immediate roster needs.
Additionally, Minter’s defensive philosophy emphasizes versatility within the secondary. The Ravens are looking to improve their passing defense, which ranked among the league’s lowest last season. Minter aims to maximize player usage and adaptability to enhance defensive performance moving forward.
In summary, the Ravens are taking decisive steps to address critical areas in their roster as the offseason progresses. With key decisions looming regarding Jackson’s contract and the need to strengthen both the offensive and defensive lines, the organization is working diligently to shape a competitive team for the upcoming NFL season.
