Mike Evans Plans for 13th NFL Season, Future Uncertain

Wide receiver Mike Evans, the all-time leading scorer for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is set to continue his NFL career into the 2026 season, though his team destination remains undetermined. This announcement came from his agent, Deryk Gilmore, during a conversation with ESPN on Tuesday.

After a challenging 2025 season in which Evans missed ten games due to a broken collarbone and a hamstring injury, he initially wanted to take time to consider his future in football. Despite these setbacks, Evans expressed that he felt he had one of his best training camps prior to the season. Reflecting on his injuries, he noted how they made him realize just how much he cherishes playing the game.

Contract Negotiations and Future Options

Gilmore informed the Buccaneers of Evans’ decision to continue playing, and both parties agreed to meet in the upcoming weeks to discuss potential contract terms. Until now, there was uncertainty surrounding Evans’ future, with speculation about whether he might retire or continue his career.

The NFL’s free agent negotiation period begins on March 9, 2026, at noon ET, allowing Evans to explore other team options if he chooses. The earliest he could officially sign with another team would be March 11, 2026. In 2024, when Evans last entered free agency, he secured a two-year deal with the Buccaneers worth up to $52 million, including $35 million guaranteed, just a week before the negotiation period started.

Evans has consistently stated his desire to remain with the Buccaneers, expressing a wish to be a “Buc for life.” The organization has reciprocated this sentiment, valuing his contributions to the team. Nevertheless, with his career nearing its twilight, he is carefully weighing his options. His connection to Tampa and the Buccaneers is strong, which complicates his decision-making process.

The Buccaneers faced disappointment this past season, missing the playoffs for the first time since their triumphant Super Bowl LV victory in 2020. As Evans contemplates his future, the next steps will be critical both for him personally and for the franchise looking to rebuild and return to contention.
