Luka Dončić Out for Lakers Matchup Against Suns Due to Injury

Star guard Luka Dončić will not participate in the Los Angeles Lakers’ game against the Phoenix Suns on March 5, 2024, due to a left leg injury. The injury, classified as a “lower left leg contusion,” was sustained during Saturday’s match against the Los Angeles Clippers. In the first quarter, Bogdan Bogdanović inadvertently kneed Dončić in the left calf, leading to his absence from the upcoming game.

During a media session on Monday, Dončić was seen with a large wrap around his calf muscle, indicating the severity of the injury. JJ Redick, a Lakers analyst, confirmed the diagnosis, stating, “It’s been diagnosed and confirmed as a lower leg contusion.” He also mentioned that Dončić is considered “day to day” regarding his recovery. This marks the second instance this season where Dončić has missed games due to a leg bruise; he was sidelined for three games during the opening week of the season for a similar issue.

Team Adjustments Ahead of Key Matchup

The Lakers are facing a challenging situation, having concluded their last game against the Clippers with LeBron James, who is nearing 41 years of age, as the only healthy starter. However, the team is expected to see the return of Deandre Ayton, who has missed the last two games due to a left elbow injury. Ayton fully participated in Monday’s practice and is set to play against the Suns, the team that originally drafted him first overall.

Additionally, Austin Reaves, who has been absent for the last three games with a mild calf strain, participated in parts of practice and is listed as questionable for the game. The Lakers will also be without Rui Hachimura, who missed the previous match due to groin soreness, and reserve player Gabe Vincent, who is dealing with a back strain.

As the Lakers prepare for this crucial game against the Suns, the impact of Dončić’s absence underscores the team’s reliance on their remaining roster. The game promises to be pivotal for both teams as they navigate the competitive landscape of the season.
