Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham expressed his deep affection for his alma mater during a recent press conference, as he navigates discussions for a new contract amidst rumors linking him to the vacant coaching position at Michigan. Following a bowl practice in Tempe, Dillingham’s emotions surfaced when he stated, “I love this place,” while visibly fighting back tears.
Dillingham, who grew up near the Arizona State campus and returned to lead the team in late 2022, confirmed that his agent is in discussions with ASU regarding an enhanced contract. “They sent my agent one after the last game at some point,” he noted, adding, “I’m not really involved in that. That’s kind of my team. I coach football.”
Speculation about Dillingham’s potential candidacy for the Michigan job intensified late Friday. This was triggered by social media activity involving several Wolverines players and staff who began following him. Describing Michigan as “one of the best programs in the country,” Dillingham acknowledged the significance of the opportunity should it arise.
On Wednesday, Michigan parted ways with coach Sherrone Moore due to a violation of university policy regarding an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Despite the rumors, Dillingham emphasized his commitment to Arizona State, stating, “That doesn’t change how I feel about here.” He highlighted his family ties to the area, mentioning, “my sister’s my neighbor. My parents live three doors down.”
Dillingham, 35, has led ASU to a successful start in the Big 12, including a conference title and a spot in the College Football Playoff in 2024. With a record of 22-16 over three seasons, the Sun Devils are set to face Duke University on December 31, 2024, in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.
Throughout this coaching cycle, Dillingham has been linked to several high-profile positions, including LSU. Nevertheless, he has consistently reaffirmed his dedication to Arizona State. Other potential candidates for the Michigan position include Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer and Washington’s Jedd Fisch, a former assistant under Jim Harbaugh.
As negotiations continue, the future remains uncertain for both Dillingham and Arizona State, but his commitment to his roots and the program is clear.
