Kansas Coach Bill Self Declares Melvin Council Jr. MVP

The Kansas Jayhawks’ head coach, Bill Self, has crowned Melvin Council Jr. as the team’s most valuable player for the ongoing 2025-26 season. Despite facing challenges, including the absence of star freshman Darryn Peterson, the team has shown resilience and grit, pulling off several hard-fought victories. During a recent appearance on Hawk Talk, Self highlighted Council’s significant contributions over the first ten games of the season.

Council’s performance has been characterized by his relentless energy and defensive prowess. Self remarked, “Melvin Council has been our MVP so far, hands down.” While acknowledging that Council’s shooting could improve, with a field goal percentage of just 34.8% and a three-point shooting rate of 18.5%, Self emphasized that Council’s impact goes beyond statistics. He plays nearly 38 minutes per game, guarding the opposing team’s top players and facilitating offense effectively.

The Jayhawks have demonstrated their toughness during a challenging seven-game stretch without Peterson, showcasing their ability to compete at a high level. Council’s tenacity has made him a key figure in the team’s rotation since their match against Duke on November 18. He has consistently logged over 36 minutes in each game since, establishing himself as a vital contributor.

Self expressed admiration for Council’s joyful playing style, stating, “To me he’s fun to support and enjoy watching him.” He likened Council to former KU point guard Tyshawn Taylor, noting that while Council may have ups and downs, his overall contributions to the team are undeniable. Currently, Council averages 10.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and a team-high 5.3 assists per game.

Council’s dynamic play has resonated with fans at Allen Fieldhouse, where he has quickly become a favorite. His infectious enthusiasm and willingness to learn have made him an integral part of the Jayhawks’ identity this season. While shooting improvements will be necessary for sustained success, Self’s recognition of Council as the MVP highlights the importance of effort, leadership, and teamwork in this gritty Kansas squad.
