Guardians Sign Pedro Avila to Non-Guaranteed Deal Ahead of Spring Training

The Cleveland Guardians are set to welcome back right-handed pitcher Pedro Avila on a non-guaranteed contract as they prepare for the upcoming spring training. This move, confirmed by the Miami-based outlet El Extrabase, marks a reunion with a player who previously contributed significantly to Cleveland’s bullpen. While the team has yet to officially announce the deal, it is reported that Avila’s contract includes a split agreement. This means he will receive a prorated Major League Baseball (MLB) salary if he secures a spot on the Guardians’ major league roster or a predetermined minor league salary otherwise.

Avila, who is 28 years old, has a history with the Guardians, having pitched for the team in 2024. During that season, he made 50 appearances out of the bullpen, accumulating over 70 innings with an impressive 3.25 ERA and 73 strikeouts. His versatility was highlighted by Stephen Vogt, the Guardians’ manager at the time, who praised Avila for his multi-inning relief efforts that often salvaged games when starters exited early.

Recent Performance and Future Prospects

Last season, Avila played as a starter for the Tokyo Yakult Swallows in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league, where he recorded a 7-8 record with a 4.04 ERA over 82.1 innings. His performance in 2024 was pivotal for Cleveland, as he was acquired in a trade with the San Diego Padres in April. Upon joining the Guardians, he quickly established himself as a reliable option in the middle innings, helping to stabilize the bullpen.

Despite being left off the playoff roster during the 2024 AL Division Series against the Detroit Tigers, Avila remained an active presence in the dugout, supporting his teammates during their playoff run. He was later included in the American League Championship Series (ALCS) roster, where he delivered four scoreless innings across three appearances, allowing only two walks and recording three strikeouts.

Strengthening the Bullpen

Avila’s return comes amid the Guardians’ efforts to strengthen their bullpen for the upcoming season. Since December, the team has added several right-handed pitchers to their roster, including Shawn Armstrong, Colin Holderman, Connor Brogdon, and Peyton Pallette, a Rule 5 pick. Additionally, the Guardians signed Codi Heuer to a minor league contract last week and extended an invitation for him to join spring training.

As the Guardians prepare for the upcoming MLB season, Avila’s addition could provide depth and experience to a bullpen that aims to enhance its performance following last year’s playoff appearance. The team will be keeping a close watch on his progress as they finalize their roster for the season ahead.
