Coatesville Aims for District Title Rematch Against Plymouth Whitemarsh

Coatesville High School’s boys basketball team has the opportunity to end a 25-year championship drought while seeking revenge against Plymouth Whitemarsh in the District 1 Class 6A title game. The two teams will face off on January 14, 2024, at 3 p.m. at St. Joseph’s University. Earlier this season, Coatesville fell to Plymouth Whitemarsh with a score of 71-56, but this rematch presents a chance for redemption.

Both teams enter the contest with impressive records of 22-5 and are assured high seeds in the upcoming Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) tournament. Coatesville has not claimed a district title since 1998, while Plymouth Whitemarsh last won the championship just three years ago in 2021. The matchup rekindles memories of their previous meeting in the title game in 1964, when Plymouth Whitemarsh secured the victory with a score of 73-63.

Coatesville’s journey to the finals has been a notable one. After winning the Ches-Mont League championship and earning a bye as the third seed, the Red Raiders defeated Chester 75-61. They faced a challenging quarterfinal against Abington, ultimately prevailing in overtime with a score of 69-64. The team then traveled to face second-seeded Methacton, where standout performances from players like Larry Brown and Colton Hiller propelled them to a 61-54 victory, setting the stage for the rematch against Plymouth Whitemarsh.

Larry Brown, a 6-foot-7 forward, has been instrumental in the Red Raiders’ success, surpassing 1,000 career points during the season. In the semifinal against Methacton, he scored 24 points, collected 10 rebounds, and recorded four blocks. His teammate, Colton Hiller, a 6-foot-7 sophomore, is also making waves, having recently crossed the 1,000-point milestone for his high school career. Hiller contributed 15 points in the semifinal match, showcasing his potential as a future Division 1 recruit.

Plymouth Whitemarsh is no stranger to talent either, featuring two Division 1 recruits: Michael Pereira, committed to the University of Pennsylvania, and Mani Sajid, set to join Towson University. Both players are seniors and have played crucial roles in their team’s journey to the finals.

The upcoming game marks Coatesville’s 17th appearance in the district title game, with the team having previously secured five championships, the last being in 2001. The stakes are high for the Red Raiders, not only for the chance to claim a title but also to avenge their earlier defeat against Plymouth Whitemarsh. As the excitement builds for this high-stakes rematch, both teams are poised to deliver an unforgettable showdown on the court.
