In a significant boost for local sports, the Blue Rock Springs Golf Club in Vallejo is enjoying a resurgence in membership and recognition. Under the stewardship of general manager Brent Cornelius, the club has seen its membership rise from 265 to potentially 300 by year’s end. This growth is a testament to the club’s reputation as a welcoming and well-maintained facility, recently voted as Solano County’s Favorite Thing to Do.
Blue Rock Springs, located at 655 Columbus Avenue, has been a staple in the community since its inception in 1941. Original owners Jack Fleming and Joe Mortora established a course that has evolved over the decades. In 1993, the East Course was introduced, designed to complement the original layout. The course underwent enhancements in 2006 by renowned architect Robert Muir Graves, who added modern features while preserving the course’s charm.
Today, the club boasts two courses with a total of 36 holes, a full driving range with 32 practice stalls, and multiple putting and chipping greens. The East Course is noted for its sweeping views of the North Bay and Mt. Tamalpais, providing a picturesque backdrop for players. The West Course is designed to be user-friendly, catering to golfers of all skill levels.
Cornelius, who has deep roots in the club dating back to his youth, expressed his commitment to fostering a positive environment for both new and long-standing members. “It’s a good course to learn the game on,” he stated. “I love the design, and it’s not overly challenging but also not easy. Over the years, people took very good care of it.”
The club operates seven days a week, closing only on Christmas Day. It has established a lively atmosphere, especially on weekends, attracting not only local players but also visitors from outside the area. The club’s popularity has been recognized beyond local accolades; in 2022, it was honored by the U.S. Commerce Association as the best in the public golf courses category. The recognition is part of a broader commendation that includes being acknowledged as one of Solano County’s top facilities from 2015 to 2025.
Reflecting on his tenure, Cornelius noted, “I love trying to keep all the members of the club happy. Some of them have been here since I first started playing.” His enthusiasm is palpable when discussing the growth of the club and the excitement of new members experiencing the course for the first time.
As for Cornelius’s personal favorites on the course, he finds it difficult to choose just one. He highlighted the 11th hole on the East Course and the 14th hole on the West Course as standout features.
