Community Mourns the Loss of John Paul Kirk, 94, Esteemed Leader

John Paul Kirk, Sr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on December 9, 2025. Surrounded by family, including his wife of 73 years, Alice Kirk, John’s life was marked by a commitment to family, community service, and a passion for flying.

Born on March 14, 1931, in Ashland, Alabama, John was the youngest of ten children born to Daniel P. and Clara I. Kirk. He maintained strong ties with his family and friends throughout his life. After graduating from Clay County High School in 1949, John enlisted in the Army Air Corps, now known as the Air Force, where he was stationed at Amarillo Air Force Base. It was there that he met Alice, marrying her on December 27, 1952.

A Life of Adventure and Service

John and Alice welcomed three children into their family: John, Jr., Kathy, and Rebecca. Their family later expanded to include ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with another great-grandchild expected in January 2026. After serving in the military, John pursued further education, earning an associate degree at Southern Tech and later a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics from Embry Riddle University at the age of 76.

His love for flying began in Texas, where he took lessons, ultimately obtaining his pilot’s license, which he held for 50 years. John often shared this passion with Alice, taking her on her first-ever flight in a small plane. Following his military service, John worked for an oil company and later moved to Bogotá, Colombia, where he and Alice made lifelong friends during their years abroad.

Community Engagement and Leadership

After returning to the United States, the couple settled in Torrance, California, where John began a successful career in financial planning. He established his own investment and financial planning firm and dedicated over 50 years to business before retiring. His extensive community service included leadership roles in various organizations such as the South Bay Sunrise Rotary Club, Toastmasters International, and the Torrance YMCA.

John also played an integral role in the First United Methodist Church of Redondo Beach since joining in 1961, where he was known for his foresight in establishing the church’s endowment fund and served on multiple boards and committees.

John Kirk is survived by his wife, Alice, and their children: John Kirk (Mindy), Kathy McCandless (Richard), and Rebecca Kirk. He leaves behind a legacy of love, adventure, and unwavering commitment to both family and community.

A memorial service and reception will be held at 11:00 on January 10, 2026, at the First United Methodist Church, located at 243 S. Broadway, Redondo Beach, CA 90277.
