Catherine “Cathy” Shea McCurdy, a beloved community leader from Hermosa Beach, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 3, 2025. She was 74 years old. The cause of her death was linked to complications from diabetes, which had been a health challenge for her in recent years.
Born to Raymond and Erma “Susie” Shea in Queens, New York, Cathy spent her childhood in Hermosa Beach. She graduated from Redondo Union High School in 1969 and married Richard H. “Dick” McCurdy in 1978. Together, they built a life that intertwined both professional and community endeavors.
Commitment to Community Service
Cathy and Dick McCurdy were well-known for their contributions to the local community, particularly through their work with the Shea Company in Hermosa Beach. However, it was their volunteer efforts that truly defined their legacy. Cathy served as a member of the Hermosa Beach School Board and dedicated many years to the Hermosa Valley School.
Among her many accomplishments, Cathy founded the Kiwanis Builders Club at the school, fostering leadership and community engagement among youth. She was also a strong supporter of the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation and the Sister City Association, demonstrating her commitment to education and community ties.
Cathy’s influence extended to local governance as well. She represented Hermosa Beach on the LA County Beach Commission for nearly a decade, advocating for coastal preservation and community interests. Her leadership earned her recognition, and in 1998, she was honored with the title of “Hermosa Beach Woman of the Year.”
Celebration of Life
Cathy McCurdy’s funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at St. Cross Episcopal Church, located at 1818 Monterey Blvd., Hermosa Beach. Following the service, a celebration of her life will be held at the Kiwanis Hall, situated at 2515 Valley Drive, Hermosa Beach.
Cathy’s legacy will endure through her numerous contributions and the lives she touched, leaving an indelible mark on the Hermosa Beach community. Her unwavering dedication to service and leadership will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
