Democratic businessman Stephen Cloobeck has officially withdrawn from the race for California governor, endorsing fellow Democrat and U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell. Cloobeck made the announcement on November 24, 2023, via a social media post, expressing his belief that Swalwell is the most qualified candidate for the position.
Cloobeck stated, “I only ran for Governor because I believed none of the other candidates were capable of doing the job. I’ve met and talked with every single one of them, and I know what leadership looks like.” He emphasized his experience working alongside prominent leaders, such as Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, and concluded that Swalwell possesses the necessary qualities to lead California effectively.
Swalwell launched his campaign on November 20, 2023, citing rising costs and public fear as his motivation to run. He declared, “I will be California’s fighter and protector. Our state is under attack. The President has militarized our streets, canceled cancer research, zeroed out clean energy climate projects, and is chasing our immigrant friends and neighbors through their workplaces, kids’ schools, and houses of worship.”
Cloobeck’s decision to step aside reflects a strategic move in California’s crowded gubernatorial landscape as the 2026 election approaches. He highlighted his complete support for Swalwell, stating, “The best thing I could do now is step aside and support him 100%. Eric is going to make an incredible Governor. He has the integrity, the focus, and the willingness to fight for what matters.”
A seasoned entrepreneur, Cloobeck is known for founding and serving as CEO of Diamond Resorts, with over 40 years in the hospitality industry. He also gained recognition for his appearance on the reality television show Under Cover Boss. His involvement extends to significant roles such as chairman of the board for Brand USA Inc. and participation in the Standing Committee on Judicial Ethics and Election Practices in 2004.
As the gubernatorial race heats up, Cloobeck’s endorsement could enhance Swalwell’s campaign, potentially consolidating support among California Democrats. The political landscape remains dynamic, with various candidates vying for the opportunity to lead the state amid pressing economic challenges and social issues.
