During his time as Chief, Bassett faced significant challenges, most notably in the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck California in 1989. His calm demeanor and decisive judgement provided critical support to the city as it began to recover from the disaster. This incident solidified his reputation as a steady leader capable of guiding his community through adversity.
Bassett’s career in law enforcement began in 1965 when he joined the Santa Ana Police Department after completing four years of service in the U.S. Air Force. His contributions extended beyond professional duties as he embraced the community he had served for so long.
Outside of his career, Bassett was an avid golfer, known for his impressive single-digit handicap. He and his late wife, Gretchen, were dedicated members of Pasatiempo Golf Course, where they enjoyed many rounds together. In 2011, he moved to the San Jose area, where he found love again with Joanne, marrying her in 2013. Together, they created a joyful life, deeply ingrained in family and community.
