Greeley Seeks New Public Works Director After Trombino’s Exit

The city of Greeley is actively searching for a new public works director following the departure of Paul Trombino on December 1, 2023. Trombino, who served in the role for four years, previously held positions as the director of public works and a Homeland Security advisor for the state of Iowa. His tenure in Greeley was marked by significant contributions to various city projects, including the Greeley-Weld County Airport improvement initiative and the Mobility Expansion for Regional Growth and Equity (MERGE) program.

Acting City Manager Brian McBroom praised Trombino’s impact on the city, stating, “Paul Trombino has been a tremendous asset to the city. We are grateful for his technical expertise and leadership of daily operations and the many infrastructure projects he championed.” Notably, Trombino was involved in critical efforts such as initiating the process for new stormwater improvements, which entail a substantial $500 million investment aimed at upgrading aging infrastructure and enhancing the city’s capacity for storm management.

Trombino’s efforts also included attracting Alquist 3D, a company specializing in 3D printing for construction, which has partnered with the Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity on the Hope Springs project. At the time of his departure, Trombino’s salary was reported at $228,800, according to Kim Kappel, Greeley Public Information Officer. The city has not disclosed the reasons for his departure, citing it as a personnel matter without further details.

New Director Search and Salary Range

The city has posted a job description outlining the responsibilities of the new public works director, which will include managing ongoing large-scale projects, securing funding, and facilitating communication among various city departments. The anticipated salary range for this position is between $161,900 and $198,350, with a maximum potential salary of $234,800, depending on the candidate’s experience. For context, the median income for Greeley residents is approximately $76,462, based on 2024 census data.

Greeley aims to fill the director position promptly, with no plans to appoint an interim director. The city’s deputy public works director, Will Jones, is set to transition to a new role as Loveland’s public works director starting on January 12, 2024. Concurrently, Greeley is also in the process of searching for a new city manager following the resignation of Raymond Lee, who has been appointed as the next city administrator of Portland, Oregon.

As Greeley navigates these leadership changes, the city remains focused on continuing the progress established under Trombino’s leadership, ensuring that critical infrastructure projects move forward effectively.
