As the holiday season approaches, nonprofits in the Williamsburg area are mobilizing to provide food, toys, and essential resources to families in need. The Williamsburg Health Foundation has stepped up by granting $130,000 to local organizations, addressing a significant rise in demand for assistance, particularly in food supplies. According to Deanna Van Hersh, president and CEO of the foundation, community partners report an increase of over 30% in the number of individuals seeking help this fall, as many struggle to maintain food security.
Support Initiatives for Local Families
Several organizations are particularly focused on ensuring that vulnerable populations receive the support they need this holiday season.
Williamsburg Area Meals on Wheels is currently holding its annual holiday fundraiser, aimed at providing meals to seniors, veterans, and disabled adults. Executive Director Catherine Upton emphasized the urgency of this initiative, citing the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and rising costs of living, which force many seniors to make difficult choices regarding their finances. “No one should have to choose between eating and staying healthy,” Upton stated. Donations can be made online at williamsburgmealsonwheels.com or sent via mail to P.O. Box 709, Williamsburg, VA 23187.
The Grove Christian Outreach Center is another key player in the community, consistently accepting food donations all year round. According to Matt Pollino, the center’s nonprofit development manager, the organization aims to ensure that no one in the community goes hungry, particularly during the holidays when demand is high. The center is also hosting a toy drive, seeking new toys for children of various ages, including soft toys for toddlers and craft sets for older children. For more information, the center’s website and social media pages can be accessed at groveoutreach.com and facebook.com/GroveChristianOutreachCenter.
Additional Opportunities for Giving
The Norge Dental Center has also contributed to local efforts by donating 270 items to FISH Inc. for Thanksgiving and continues to accept nonperishable food items for Christmas. Donations can be dropped off during business hours or after hours at their facility located at 7450 Richmond Road.
FISH Inc. is actively seeking both food and monetary donations, as well as children’s pajamas and underwear. Donations can be made at their location on 312 2nd St., Williamsburg, from 10:00 to 16:00, Monday through Friday.
A new initiative, A Way Home, launched by Krystyn Reid, the York County Commonwealth’s Attorney, aims to support families facing housing instability or emergency transitions during the winter months. This initiative is backed by the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula and seeks donations of new blankets, towels, hygiene items, and children’s toys. Items can be delivered to the United Way at 101 York Crossing Road, Yorktown, VA 23692.
As the holiday season progresses, these organizations play a crucial role in supporting the community. Their efforts highlight the importance of collective action in addressing the needs of those facing hardship during this time of year.
