Born on June 6, 1947, in Providence, Rhode Island, Thomason was the son of Charles Thomason and Dorothy Traynor, both of whom predeceased him. He enlisted in the Air Force during the Vietnam Era, serving as a weapons mechanic in the Special Forces. His commitment to his fellow servicemen remained strong throughout his life, and he was honorably discharged with honors, including the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Military Achievement Award.
In 2000, Thomason married Barbara Jean Zilch-Thomason. The couple moved to Redwood Valley in 2016 after previously residing in Healdsburg, California. They were active participants in various equestrian groups, such as the High Country Trail Riding Groups, which included the Russian River Riders, the Sonoma County Santa Rosa Driving & Riding Club, the Reno Sierra Riders, and the Sonoma County Trail Blazers. Tragically, Barbara passed away on June 6, 2023, leaving a profound impact on Thomason’s life.
Thomason’s life took a significant turn following a head-on car accident that left him severely injured. After his recovery, he became a respected saddle maker in Healdsburg, known for his custom saddles that provided a perfect fit for both horse and rider. Additionally, he served as a bus driver for the Healdsburg School System, where he was beloved by the students who rode on his bus.
Thomas Thomason was characterized by his quick wit, warm smile, and generosity. Neighbors fondly remember him riding his tractor with the American flag proudly displayed, symbolizing his deep patriotism. His porch also featured the American flag, a testament to his love for his country.
A devout Christian, Thomason is survived by his sister, Caryl Thomason, who resides on the East Coast. He is remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. In his honor, a living memorial has been suggested, encouraging those who wish to pay tribute to consider planting a tree or flowers in his memory.
