Rick Steves Purchases Lynnwood Hygiene Center for $2.25 Million

The Lynnwood Hygiene Center, which provides essential services to homeless individuals in Washington, has been saved from closure thanks to a surprise purchase by travel writer and television host Rick Steves. Facing the imminent shutdown of the facility, Steves stepped in, acquiring the property for $2.25 million to ensure that the center can continue offering free showers, food, and clothing to those in need.

Located in Lynnwood, the hygiene center has operated rent-free since 2020, relying heavily on donations to serve approximately 45 people daily. Its closure was a significant concern for the local community, particularly for those who depend on its services for basic hygiene and dignity. Executive Director Sandra Mears expressed disbelief when informed that the property would be sold, leading her to initiate an urgent effort to secure the center’s future.

I was in disbelief, but I wouldn’t go down without a fight,” Mears stated. Her determination culminated in an email exchange with Steves, who ultimately decided to purchase the property in December 2023.

The center’s manager, Brett Barham, highlighted the importance of the facility, saying, “I wish there was a place like this when I was out there.” He noted that the potential closure had left many regular visitors feeling anxious about their options. The center not only provides showers and meals but also serves as a safe space for people like Amber Mayor, who visits almost daily with her family.

“For your own self-worth, it’s so important,” Mayor remarked, reflecting on the vital role the center plays in the lives of its users. She shared her relief upon learning that the center would remain operational, stating, “I cried; it was such a weight off my shoulders to know that we were still going to have this place.”

The Lynnwood Hygiene Center operates Monday through Saturday, from 10:00 to 17:00 during the winter and 10:00 to 18:00 in the summer. As the community celebrates this unexpected turnaround, many are grateful for Steves’ generous contribution, which he described as “the most beautiful Christmas present (he) could have.”

This acquisition not only secures the center’s immediate future but also reinforces the importance of community support in addressing homelessness and enhancing the well-being of vulnerable populations. With Steves at the helm of this initiative, the Lynnwood Hygiene Center is poised to continue serving as a crucial resource for those who need it most.
