Richard Allen Forward, a respected businessman and beloved family man, passed away on September 15, 2025, at the age of 89. Born in Red Bluff, California, on February 1, 1936, his life was marked by hard work, devotion to family, and a commitment to his community.
Richard was the son of Alva and Berenice Forward and grew up in a family of five children, alongside his siblings Beverley, Russell (Pat), Alva Jr., and Robert. His education began in a one-room schoolhouse at Forward’s Mill, known as Rockland School, before he moved on to Lincoln Street Elementary School. In 1948-49, he was part of the inaugural class at Bidwell Elementary School and later graduated from Red Bluff Union High School. He continued his education at Shasta Junior College and Chico State University.
A Diverse Career Path
Richard’s professional journey began in the janitorial industry when he founded Merchants Janitorial Service in 1957. He operated this business for a decade while also working nights in the lumber industry with companies such as Forward Brothers Lumber Company, U.S. Plywood, and Commander Industries in both Red Bluff and Texarkana, Texas. Ultimately, Richard found his true passion in the insurance sector, starting with the California Farm Bureau and later establishing the Richard Forward Insurance Agency. He managed this agency with pride from 1984 until his retirement in 1991.
Retirement, however, did not signify an end to Richard’s active lifestyle. It marked the beginning of a new chapter filled with travel, golf, and cherished moments with his wife, Ann Forward. Together, they fostered a loving partnership while raising their five daughters: Berenice Forward, Christy Forward (Bill Galbraith), Kelly Forward, Jill Etzler (Matt), and Jennifer Skinner (Patrick).
Legacy of Love and Community
Richard and Ann shared countless adventures, exploring the United States in their RV, visiting new places, and enjoying tranquil days at their cabin in Manton. Their relationship was characterized by laughter, loyalty, and a deep affection for one another. Richard’s legacy extends beyond his immediate family, as he is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, as well as a wide circle of close friends.
He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, strong character, and ability to make others feel valued and comfortable. His life was rich with purpose, laughter, and love.
A Celebration of Life will take place on November 13, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Red Bluff, California. Family and friends are invited to gather in honor of Richard Forward’s remarkable life. Those wishing to pay tribute to his memory can make contributions to the Kelly-Griggs House Museum or Manton Parks.
