The remodel, led by interior designer Suzy Hoodless and architect Giancarlo Alhadeff, aims to create a vibrant family space while honoring the property’s artistic history.

Hoodless highlights that the design process felt intuitive, stating, “The building had great bones, and we wanted to honor its heritage, albeit in a fresh way.”
Reviving Heritage with Modern Flair
Key design features include handcrafted cement tiles in the entrance hall, a brass-wrapped kitchen island, and custom furniture that enhances the home’s character. The couple, who have two young boys, sought to reintroduce a sense of homeliness and functionality to the space. Their passion for European design is evident, with a focus on art and mid-century aesthetics, informed by Alhadeff’s Italian roots.
The reconfiguration of the home’s layout was crucial for accommodating the family’s needs. The basement now hosts a kitchen and dining area, alongside a family room and a formal living room. This arrangement allows for both relaxed family gatherings and elegant entertaining. Hoodless and Alhadeff have seamlessly integrated modern elements while preserving the traditional charm of the property.
Innovative Spaces and Thoughtful Design
The upper levels of the home have also been thoughtfully redesigned. A guest room was transformed into a dressing room with an en-suite bath, creating a self-contained area for parents. Alhadeff notes, “Listed properties always require some imaginative thinking, but in this case, small yet meaningful tweaks unlocked the layout for us.”
Color plays a pivotal role in the home’s aesthetic. Hoodless opted for an unusual palette, incorporating combinations of vivid blue, soft green, and terracotta, all softened by limewashed walls. “They introduce softness and elegance,” she explains. The entrance hall features contemporary tiles that nod to traditional encaustic designs, further blending old and new.
The completed renovation not only respects the property’s history but also infuses it with a contemporary vibrancy. The home’s artistic legacy is underscored by its past inhabitants, which include a celebrated British actor and a jazz musician from the 1920s. Hoodless has created a space that balances modern functionality with an appreciation for artistic heritage.
As the owners settle into their newly transformed home, Alhadeff reflects on the project’s success, saying, “You know you’ve done a good job when you are invited back for dinner.” This renovation stands as a testament to the timelessness of the Arts and Crafts movement while embracing modern living.
