The city of Greeley has initiated the search for a new public works director following the departure of Paul Trombino on December 1, 2023. Trombino, who served for four years, previously held the position of director and Homeland Security advisor for the state of Iowa before joining Greeley in 2021.
During his tenure, Trombino played a pivotal role in several significant projects, including the Greeley-Weld County Airport improvement initiative and the Mobility Expansion for Regional Growth and Equity (MERGE) program. His involvement with the Catalyst project is also noteworthy, as it is set to be decided by a citywide vote regarding a zoning ordinance that the city council passed earlier this year.
Acting City Manager Brian McBroom praised Trombino’s contributions, stating, “Paul Trombino has been a tremendous asset to the city. We are grateful for his technical expertise and leadership of daily operations and the many infrastructure projects he championed.” McBroom highlighted the importance of Trombino’s work in positioning Greeley for future growth.
In addition to these projects, Trombino is recognized for initiating new stormwater improvements, a substantial investment of $500 million aimed at enhancing the city’s infrastructure to better manage storm events. His efforts also led to the recruitment of Alquist 3D, a company specializing in 3D printing for construction, which has partnered with the Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity on the Hope Springs project.
Trombino’s annual salary at the time of his departure was $228,800, according to Kim Kappel, the Greeley Public Information Officer. The city has not disclosed the reasons behind his exit, citing it as a personnel matter without further details.
The city’s job posting for the new public works director indicates that the successful candidate will oversee numerous ongoing projects and secure necessary funding while ensuring effective communication across various city departments. The anticipated salary range for the position is between $161,900 and $198,350, with a maximum potential salary of $234,800, depending on the candidate’s experience.
According to 2024 census data, the median income for Greeley residents is approximately $76,462. The city is aiming for a swift hiring process to maintain the momentum of Trombino’s work, with no plans for an interim director. Meanwhile, Will Jones, the deputy public works director, is set to transition to the role of public works director in Loveland, starting on January 12, 2024.
Additionally, Greeley is concurrently seeking a new city manager following the resignation of Raymond Lee, who has recently been appointed as the city administrator of Portland, Oregon. The dual searches reflect the city’s commitment to ensuring effective leadership and continuity in its public service operations.
