Clemson Scholar Sara Alkelani Named Finalist for Rhodes Scholarship

Sara Alkelani, a student from Clemson University, has been selected as a finalist for the esteemed Rhodes Scholarship. This prestigious award is widely recognized as one of the most selective honors available to American college students, offering full financial support for graduate studies at the University of Oxford.

Alkelani’s achievement was acknowledged by Robert H. Jones, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at Clemson. He stated, “Sara’s selection as a Rhodes finalist is a remarkable achievement reflecting both her talent and the many opportunities available to Clemson students.” He emphasized how her success highlights the value of a Clemson education, which includes a supportive community and dedicated faculty mentors.

Academic and Leadership Accomplishments

Currently enrolled in the Clemson University Honors College, Alkelani is a Dixon Global Policy Scholar. This competitive program prepares students to address critical global policy issues. In the summer of 2024, she interned at the Arab American Institute, gaining valuable experience in public policy through research analysis and drafting policy briefs.

Her impressive internship portfolio also includes participation in the United Nations Intensive Summer Study Program in New York, where she interacted with diplomats and UN officials on topics such as refugee protection and global development. Most recently, she served as a Capitol Hill Intern, contributing to the operations of a congressional office and engaging directly with constituents.

Alkelani’s commitment to leadership extends beyond academics. As a member of the National Scholars Program, she actively participates in various student government councils and advisory boards within the Honors College and the College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences. Her dedication to community service earned her the Omicron Delta Kappa Service to Society Award.

Recognition and Future Steps

Leslie Hossfeld, dean of the College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences, praised Alkelani, saying, “Sara exemplifies academic excellence and strength of character.” Hossfeld noted that her compassion and commitment to community building set her apart as a leader both at Clemson and beyond.

Sarah Winslow, Dean of the Honors College, highlighted Alkelani’s unique ability to contribute to her community. “Clemson University and its surrounding communities are better places because Sara Alkelani was here,” Winslow remarked.

Alkelani is among finalists representing a district that includes South Carolina, Georgia, and North Carolina. She will participate in interviews with the district selection committee in Atlanta on November 14-15, 2024. Following these interviews, the committee will announce the two candidates chosen as Rhodes Scholars.
