The family of James R. Knapp, affectionately known as Jim, is honoring a life rich in achievements and personal connections following his passing at the age of 89. Jim’s legacy is firmly rooted in the foundations of Southern California, where he made significant contributions to law and real estate, but his greatest joy was found in his family and faith.
Born in 1936 in San Bernardino, California, Jim’s life was marked by an unwavering commitment to his loved ones. He met his wife, Sally Diane Dewar, during their time at Stanford University, where they both attended. Their marriage, which began in September 1958, flourished alongside Jim’s burgeoning career.
After relocating to San Francisco, Jim earned his law degree from Hastings College of Law. His career began at Kindel and Anderson in Santa Ana, but he later joined friends to establish the Newport Beach law firm Kalmbach, DeMarco, Knapp and Chillingworth. Jim’s journey took a pivotal turn when he transitioned from law to real estate development, where he became a transformative force in the region’s growth.
In 1973, Jim founded Brookhollow, a company that not only reflected his professional acumen but also became a family enterprise. As Chairman and strategic advisor, he took great pride in working alongside his sons and, eventually, his grandsons. Jim instilled in them the values of hard work and integrity—principles that guided his own life.
Jim’s professional accomplishments were complemented by his deep commitment to community service. He generously contributed his time and expertise to various organizations, including serving on the boards of Hoag Hospital and Harbor Day School. Additionally, he was a founding member of both The Pacific Club and Big Canyon Country Club, as well as an officer at Pacific Enterprises.
The bond between Jim and Sally endured for 68 years, during which they traveled extensively while cherishing time spent with their family. Jim’s Christian faith was central to his identity, manifesting through his love for reading the Bible, listening to prominent Christian leaders, and attending Mariners Church. His sharp intellect and sense of humor made him a delightful companion, while his quiet generosity touched many lives.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Sally Knapp, along with their children, Angi Evans (Pete), Greg Knapp (Vida), and Tommy Knapp (Bethany). He also leaves behind his niece Donna Miller, grandchildren Robert Knapp (Jillian), James Peter “J.P.” Knapp, Clayton Knapp (Lauren), Wilson Knapp (Elise), Lance Knapp (Maggie), Samantha Knapp Meek (Brenden), Sally Evans, Charlie Evans, and George Knapp, along with five great-grandchildren: Chloe, Tyler, Mason, Naomi, and Miller, with two more expected in 2026.
A service commemorating Jim’s life will be held at Mariners Church on Monday, December 15 at 10:30 in the morning, followed by a private burial at Pacific View Memorial Park. The family finds comfort in the knowledge that Jim, a good and faithful man, has completed his journey and is now home.
