Ruth C. Magnuson, a cherished member of the Portland community, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2025, at the age of 94, surrounded by her family. Born in Arlington, Massachusetts, to George J. W. and Ina S. Kenney, Ruth lived a rich and fulfilling life marked by deep connections to her family and community.
Ruth graduated from Arlington High School in 1948 and married the Rev. Robert H. Magnuson in 1953. Together, they served various Lutheran congregations across the United States, including locations in Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts, before settling in Portland.
Throughout her life, Ruth was known for her vibrant spirit and diverse interests. As a child, she enjoyed roller skating down steep dirt roads and later became a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox, often engaging in lively discussions about the game. Professionally, she dedicated over 30 years to her career at Campbell, Payson and Noyes/Commercial Union Insurance.
In her community, Ruth was deeply involved in church activities, contributing her time to the church sewing group and serving as a Girl Scout cookie mother. Her commitment to civic duty was evident in her role as a longtime election official. Her family and friends remember her as a humorous and inquisitive individual, a prolific correspondent who cherished her connections.
Ruth is survived by her four children: Karen M. Fitzgerald of Westbrook, Robert E. Magnuson of South Portland, Cynthia R. Magnuson of Portland, and Christopher S. Magnuson (Jana R.) of Portland. She also leaves behind two grandchildren, Kathryn F. Gaudet of Erving, Massachusetts, and Caroline F. Johnson of Cumberland, as well as five great-grandchildren: Philip R. and Joseph W. Gaudet, and twins Zachary R., Allison C., and Abigail S. Johnson.
Ruth was predeceased by her parents, her former husband, and several siblings, including John, Virginia, George Jr., and Robert Kenney. She also mourned the loss of her son-in-law, Edouard G. DuPlessis.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation on December 3, 2025, from 16:00 to 19:00 at Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home, located at 199 Woodford Street in Portland. A private interment will follow.
