Nemours Children’s Health Partners with School for Equine Therapy

Nemours Children’s Health in Jacksonville has officially partnered with the North Florida School of Special Education (NFSSE) to introduce equine therapy for children benefiting from animal-assisted therapy. This initiative aims to enhance the therapeutic experience for young patients through interactions with miniature horses from the Delores Barr Weaver Therapeutic Equestrian Center.

The collaboration will facilitate regular visits from therapy horses to Nemours Children’s, where they will participate in equine-assisted activities tailored for children with chronic medical conditions. According to a news release from Nemours, this partnership guarantees consistent access to trained therapy horses and handlers, which is vital for both therapeutic continuity and the safety of the children involved.

Enhancing Community Engagement

In addition to providing therapy services, the partnership fosters opportunities for NFSSE students to engage with Nemours Children’s offerings, reinforcing a model of inclusive, community-based care. This collaborative approach not only benefits the children at Nemours but also enriches the educational experience for NFSSE students, promoting mutual learning and interaction.

To support the initiative, the Rotary Club of East Arlington contributed a specially designed miniature horse trailer. This trailer will facilitate the transportation of therapy horses from the equestrian center to Nemours Children’s, thereby expanding the program’s reach and enabling more children in the community to access beneficial equine therapy.

This partnership represents a significant step in combining healthcare and education, with the potential to improve the quality of life for children facing various challenges. The integration of animal-assisted therapy into treatment programs has been recognized for its positive effects on emotional, social, and physical well-being.

The collaboration between Nemours Children’s Health and NFSSE highlights the importance of innovative approaches to therapy and the role that community support plays in enhancing healthcare services. As these miniature horses begin their visits, they are expected to bring not just smiles but also therapeutic benefits to the children they meet.
