Theatre Albany Stages Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ‘Cinderella’ with Local Talent

Theatre Albany is set to present a vibrant production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella”, featuring Olivia Brown in the lead role. The show will run from February 13 to 22, 2024, with performances scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on select evenings and matinees at 2 p.m. on weekends.

Director Vickie Knuckles, an educator at Byne Christian School, has taken on her second directing role with Theatre Albany. She is currently juggling multiple productions, including “Annie” in March and “Newsies” in April with the Albany Area Homeschool Theater Company. Knuckles expressed her passion for musical theatre, stating, “I’ve always loved music – singing, playing piano… God put a change in my heart and I gradually grew to love musical theater.”

The production features a talented cast of 45 students from fifth to twelfth grade, representing various schools in the Albany area, including Lee County High School and Terrell Academy. Knuckles emphasized the importance of community support, crediting a dedicated team of volunteers for their contributions to the show. “I’m just spoiled; I have so much volunteer help,” she remarked during a dress rehearsal.

The creative team includes Musical Director Andrew Bode, Choreographer Zan Twiggs, and Costume Designer Amanda Morrow, among others. This collaborative effort allows Knuckles to bring her vision to life, as she noted, “Because they’re here, I’ve been given the opportunity to bring my vision to life.”

The cast of “Cinderella” showcases a mix of seasoned performers and newcomers. Alongside Olivia Brown, key characters include Ariana Cavalcanto as Cinderella’s Godmother, Iva Evans as the evil Stepmother, and Jonah Walsh as the Prince. Knuckles praised the dedication of the young actors, saying, “These are kids who are veterans, who’ve been in productions with their schools, their churches and with Theatre Albany.”

The show promises to be a delightful experience for audiences, combining classic storytelling with the enthusiasm of local youth. With such a strong emphasis on community involvement, Theatre Albany continues to enrich the cultural landscape of the region.

Performances will take place on the following dates:
– February 13, 14, 20, 21 at 7:30 p.m.
– February 15 and 22 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are expected to sell quickly, given the popularity of the production and the involvement of local talent. The theatre community in Albany is clearly thriving, and “Cinderella” serves as a testament to the dedication and passion of its participants.
