Prime Video Greenlights ‘Lore Olympus’ Animated Series Adaptation

After years of anticipation, the beloved webcomic Lore Olympus is officially being transformed into an animated series. Prime Video announced the adaptation, which is set to premiere exclusively in over 240 countries and territories worldwide. This project marks a significant milestone as it represents the first adult animated series developed by The Jim Henson Company, in collaboration with WEBTOON Productions.

From Webcomic to Screen

Originally launched on WEBTOON in 2018, Lore Olympus quickly became a cultural sensation, garnering more than 1.8 billion views globally. The series offers a contemporary twist on the myth of Persephone, intertwining themes of power, trauma, identity, and forbidden love with rich visual storytelling. Its success was further solidified when it made history by becoming the first title to win an Eisner Award, a Harvey Award, and a Ringo Award for Best Webcomic or Digital Book within the same year.

Julia Cooperman, who will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, expressed her excitement about the project, stating, “I am beyond thrilled to partner with Prime Video, The Jim Henson Company, and WEBTOON on the series adaptation of Rachel Smythe’s wildly popular webcomic.” She emphasized the enduring relevance of these ancient tales in modern storytelling and expressed eagerness to share the reimagined narrative of Persephone and Hades.

Acknowledging the Fandom

David Madden, President of WEBTOON Productions, highlighted the passionate community surrounding the series, noting, “With stunning artwork, rich storytelling, and unforgettable characters, Lore Olympus and Rachel Smythe have built a passionate global fandom clamoring for more.” This enthusiasm reflects the growing demand for adaptations of popular webcomics.

Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company, called the adaptation “deeply inspiring,” underscoring the timelessness of Smythe’s approach to mythology and the significance of venturing into adult animation. Prime Video’s Head of Animation, Melissa Wolfe, also praised the collaboration, describing it as “an exciting addition to Prime Video’s growing animation slate,” which already includes popular series such as The Legend of Vox Machina and Hazbin Hotel.

While a release date for the Lore Olympus animated series has not yet been announced, anticipation continues to build among fans and industry observers alike. This adaptation not only signifies the rise of webcomics in mainstream media but also opens new avenues for storytelling that resonates with contemporary audiences.
