The beloved musical film Mamma Mia!, featuring Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep, is set to debut on Prime Video on November 15, 2025. This romantic musical, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, originally captivated audiences when it premiered in cinemas on September 12, 2008, followed by a sequel released a decade later in July 2018.
The film centers on Streep’s character, Donna, a single mother who runs a hotel and is busy preparing for her daughter Sophie’s wedding. Sophie, portrayed by Seyfried, embarks on a quest to uncover the identity of her biological father, leading to a series of comedic and heartfelt moments.
The original Mamma Mia! became a significant box office hit, grossing over $600 million worldwide against a production budget of approximately $52 million. Despite its commercial success, critical reception was mixed. The film holds a score of 55 percent on the Tomatometer and 66 percent on the audience-driven Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes. Its sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, released in 2018, also performed well but with a lower box office total of around $395 million.
In recent discussions at the Toronto International Film Festival, Amanda Seyfried hinted that a third installment of Mamma Mia! may be in the works. She expressed optimism, stating, “It is, yes. I think. We all said, ‘Yeah, definitely.’ It’s our way of marketing and getting support. Big movies like that are all about studio timing.”
Seyfried also reflected on her decision to participate in the sequel rather than in a film adaptation of Wicked in 2018. She explained, “I remember they did Mamma Mia! 2 instead of Wicked. They could only do one big movie at that time, so we ended up slotting into that. So, it’s about silly things like that.”
The arrival of Mamma Mia! on Prime Video is expected to reignite interest in this musical phenomenon, bringing its catchy songs and vibrant performances back to a new generation of viewers.
