Lizzo explained that the book delves into her personal connection with the flute, an instrument that has played a significant role in her life. “Everyone always asked me my origin story with the flute. Before pursuing a career in music, Lizzo had aspirations of writing what she referred to as The Great American Novel. “This is such a beautiful marriage of everything that’s me,” she stated, highlighting how the book integrates her various passions and experiences.
The Alter Ego Inspired by Beyoncé
The title of the book is a playful nod to Lizzo’s flute, affectionately named Sasha Beatrice Flootin’ Jefferson Kirkwood Johnson Esquire the III. The choice of the name “Sasha” draws inspiration from fellow Houston native Beyoncé, who famously adopted the alter ego “Sasha Fierce.” Lizzo remarked, “Beyoncé’s such an inspiration to me, especially when I was younger growing up.”
Reflecting on her own journey, Lizzo discussed the duality of her identity while studying the flute in college and breaking into Houston’s rap scene. She expressed that the flute became her own form of self-expression, akin to an alter ego. “Sasha Fierce. Sasha Floot,” she quipped, illustrating the parallel between her artistic identities.
