DreamWorks Launches Prequel Series for ‘The Bad Guys’ on Netflix

DreamWorks Animation is expanding its successful franchise with a prequel series based on the animated film “The Bad Guys.” This new show will be available on Netflix and aims to explore the origins of the notorious group of criminals. Following the positive reception of previous films and holiday specials, the series promises to engage a new generation of viewers.

The prequel, titled “Breaking In,” chronicles how the main characters united and transitioned into their lives of crime. It provides a fresh perspective for both existing fans and newcomers who may not have seen the original films. Notably, the series features a new voice cast, differentiating it from the films, where actors like Sam Rockwell and Marc Maron lent their voices to the main characters. In “Breaking In,” Michael Godere takes over the role of Wolf, while Chris Diamantopoulos voices Snake. Other changes in the cast include Ezekiel Ajeigbe, Raul Ceballos, and Mallory Low, who replace Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, and Awkwafina, respectively.

The move to create a television series builds on DreamWorks’ strategy to strengthen its franchise portfolio, particularly as it has previously released several holiday specials related to “The Bad Guys.” Although the last special was released in 2025, the franchise remains a solid performer for the studio. The original film debuted in 2022 and grossed over $250 million globally, while its sequel released earlier this year earned approximately $237 million.

This new prequel series not only capitalizes on the established popularity of the characters but also allows for creative storytelling that can captivate audiences on a different platform. By not requiring viewers to have seen the films beforehand, “Breaking In” is designed to be accessible, encouraging a broader audience to engage with the franchise.

With the expansion of “The Bad Guys” universe, DreamWorks is positioning itself to tap into the growing demand for animated content on streaming platforms. The series is set to premiere on Netflix in March 2024, marking another milestone in the studio’s ongoing efforts to develop engaging animated programming that resonates with children and families alike.

As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, DreamWorks’ investment in original content like “Breaking In” indicates a commitment to storytelling that appeals to a diverse audience, solidifying its place in the competitive animation industry.
