The Fort Lewis College (FLC) basketball teams kicked off their seasons with impressive victories, showcasing strong performances on both the men’s and women’s sides. The men’s team edged out Eastern New Mexico, winning 76-73, while the women’s team dominated Western New Mexico, securing an 83-57 victory.
In the men’s game, redshirt sophomore guard Jaxon Smith proved his worth as a shooter, scoring a remarkable 28 points in his debut for the Skyhawks. His performance was critical, particularly as the team faced challenges with rebounding and ball control, giving up 21 offensive rebounds and committing 16 turnovers. Despite these setbacks, FLC rallied from a seven-point deficit with less than eight minutes remaining in the game.
Smith’s shooting statistics were impressive: he recorded a field goal percentage of 60% on 9-15 shooting, including 7-11 from beyond the arc and a perfect 3-3 from the free-throw line. His late-game heroics, including two key free throws from transfer junior guard Donald Bangham Jr., sealed the win. Coach Jordan Mast expressed satisfaction with the outcome, acknowledging the aggressive play of Eastern New Mexico and emphasizing the importance of Smith’s contributions.
The first half of the game saw FLC trailing by as many as five points. Smith’s late free throws put the Skyhawks ahead 34-32 at halftime. The second half was marked by turnovers, but FLC regained control through a series of strong plays, including a crucial run of seven consecutive points scored by Smith.
In contrast, the women’s team showcased a commanding performance against Western New Mexico, dominating from the start. The Skyhawks led by 22 points after the first quarter and maintained their advantage throughout the game. Ten players contributed to the score, with freshman guard Claudia Palacio Gámez and sophomore guard Savannah Dotray each scoring 10 points.
FLC’s shooting was efficient, achieving 50% from the field and 50% from three-point range. Despite recording 20 turnovers, the Skyhawks out-rebounded their opponents 41-31. Coach Jason Zuniga praised his team’s passing, shooting, and defensive efforts, which set the tone early in the game.
Both teams will face quick turnarounds, with the men’s team scheduled to play Western New Mexico on March 16 at 17:00, and the women’s team set to compete against Cameron University on the same day at 13:00 in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
These opening games reflect the potential of the FLC basketball programs as they embark on the new season, showcasing talent and resilience on the court.
