Norman Gilbert Levin, affectionately known as “Gibby,” passed away at the age of 97, leaving behind a legacy that touched many lives. His contributions to the community and his dedication to family are fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Born and raised in Chicago, Levin graduated from Hyde Park High School before earning an accounting degree from Roosevelt University. He co-founded Wolin-Levin Inc., a respected real estate management firm based in Hyde Park, where he continued to work well into his 90s. Levin’s professional journey demonstrated his commitment to excellence and community service.
Community Engagement and Family Life
Levin was not only known for his professional achievements but also for his vibrant personal life. He was an enthusiastic supporter of local sports teams, including the Chicago Blackhawks and the Chicago Bears, and enjoyed attending the symphony and opera. Levin was also a familiar face at popular local establishments like Wolfy’s and Manny’s Deli.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Levin played a significant role in the Jewish community. He served as the founding chair of the Jewish Federation Management Corporation (JFMC), part of the Jewish United Fund (JUF), where he worked to enhance community welfare. His commitment extended to education as well, reflected in his board membership at Roosevelt University.
Levin cherished his family life, having been happily married to Shulamith (“Shellie”) for 59 years. Together, they explored the world, frequently traveling with their extended family. He is survived by his children, Robert (Linda), the late Barbara (Marc) Goldberg, and Julie (David) Freireich, as well as his six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A Lasting Legacy
Levin’s passing marks the end of an era for his family and community. He was pre-deceased by his parents, William and Sarah (Pinckovitch), along with his siblings Harold, Arthur, and Lillian (Schaffner). His legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jewish United Fund, supporting community initiatives and programs. A chapel service in his honor will be held on November 2, 2023, at 10:00 AM at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, located at 1700 W. Rand Rd, Arlington Heights. Interment will follow at Shalom Memorial Park.
