Medford High School implemented a lockdown procedure on the morning of March 15, 2024, following the receipt of an anonymous threat. Students and staff were directed to remain in their classrooms while visitors were prohibited from entering the building, according to an email from principal Marta Cabral. The school entered “Secure” mode at 09:01 a.m., signaling heightened safety measures.
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
In her communication, Cabral confirmed that the Medford Police Department was on-site and executing their established protocols. This included the deployment of canine units to assist in thoroughly clearing various areas of the school. “Please know that we are working in partnership with them and at this time police have physically cleared the building for a known threat. They are now conducting the canine clearance,” she stated.
A police cruiser was observed in the school parking lot, positioned near a black SUV with tinted windows. Witnesses reported seeing an officer engaging with the driver of the vehicle. The ongoing investigation emphasizes the seriousness with which authorities are treating the situation.
Community Precautions and Related Warnings
As the lockdown unfolded, Tufts University, located approximately two miles from Medford High School, issued a separate warning regarding nearby federal immigration enforcement activity. This advisory stemmed from communication sent to the Tufts community by the university’s Office of Public Safety. These developments have heightened tensions in the area, prompting residents and students to remain vigilant.
The Globe has reached out for comments from administrators at Medford Public Schools and the Medford Police Department to gain further insight into the incident. As this is a developing story, updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
