Mark Haist Takes Over as Interim Principal of Greenville High

Mark Haist, the current assistant principal at Greenville High School, has been appointed as the interim principal for the remainder of the academic year. This follows the announcement of principal Danelle Nauta’s retirement effective December 31, 2024. The decision was confirmed by Wayne Roedel, the Superintendent of Greenville Public Schools.

On Thursday, Roedel expressed his confidence in Haist’s ability to lead during this transitional period. He stated that the decision came after “thoughtful conversations” with both Haist and fellow assistant principal Kristen Ritter. Roedel emphasized a collaborative leadership model, indicating that while Haist will officially hold the title of principal, day-to-day operations will be a joint effort between Haist and Ritter. “Their combined expertise and shared commitment put us in a strong position to support GHS through this transition,” he noted.

Supporting Student Success and Stability

To further ensure a smooth transition, Roedel announced that Samantha Hondorp, who oversees the high school’s Legacy Learning program, will act as a substitute assistant principal. Hondorp’s responsibilities will focus on student behavior, collaborating closely with Lyndy Harrison and the Student Resource Center team. Roedel highlighted that Hondorp’s familiarity with the school’s environment would be essential for maintaining continuity and stability during this change.

In a statement addressing students and families, Haist expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to step into this role. “As a proud GHS alumnus, this opportunity is especially meaningful to me,” he stated. He reflected on the strong traditions and supportive community that shaped his own educational experience, asserting that it is a privilege to continue that legacy for current students.

Haist acknowledged the support of the school’s administrative team and outlined his goals for the remainder of the school year. He stated that a significant focus will be on enhancing the school’s culture and climate. “We want every student to feel valued, connected, and supported,” he emphasized. “A positive learning environment is the foundation for academic and personal growth.”

A Commitment to Collaboration

Haist reiterated his commitment to working collaboratively with staff and fostering a welcoming environment centered on respect, safety, and belonging. “Together, we are committed to supporting students and ensuring that Greenville High School remains a place where every learner has the opportunity to succeed,” he said.

As the school community looks forward to the rest of the academic year, both Haist and the administrative team remain dedicated to partnering with families and empowering students. The leadership transition at Greenville High School aims to maintain a strong educational foundation while navigating the changes ahead.
