Lewis University in Oak Brook, Illinois, has announced a temporary transition of some classes to online learning due to the presence of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operating from the same building. In a recent communication to students and faculty, the university explained that the U.S. General Services Administration leased office space within the facility where ICE will establish some administrative offices.
The decision affects all in-person classes at the university’s Oak Brook location from Monday through Saturday. A spokesperson for the university stated, “Lewis is one of several tenants in the property and does not have control over leasing decisions involving other occupants.”
Community Concerns and Precautionary Measures
The university’s shift to online learning reflects growing community concerns and social media discussions about potential protests related to ICE’s presence. To address these issues and ensure a safe learning environment, the school is taking precautionary steps. The spokesperson added, “We are communicating directly with property management and will provide updates as additional information becomes available.”
Classes that cannot transition to an online format will be canceled. The university has not provided further details about specific courses or the anticipated duration of this online learning arrangement.
As the situation develops, Lewis University remains committed to maintaining a productive and welcoming atmosphere for all students and faculty during this challenging time.
