Guam Community College Unveils $2.7M Culinary Arts Renovation

On March 12, 2024, Guam Community College (GCC) celebrated the grand opening of its newly renovated Culinary Arts and Baking Center, a significant development in culinary education valued at over $2.7 million. The facility, previously known as the Culinary Arts Kitchen/Classroom and Multipurpose Auditorium, has been transformed into a state-of-the-art culinary kitchen and classroom space designed to accommodate the increasing student interest in GCC’s Culinary Arts, Food Service Management, and Baking postsecondary programs.

The renovation project focused on enhancing the instructional environment by widening spaces, upgrading kitchen equipment, and improving safety features. Enhancements to hygiene and ventilation were also pivotal in the redesign. The updated facility includes a mechanical system that utilizes Upper-Room Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation and non-ozone bipolar ionization technology, significantly reducing exposure to airborne illnesses.

In her opening remarks, GCC President Mary A. Y. Okada likened the project to meal preparation, highlighting the collaborative effort required to bring the renovation to fruition. “Every project here at the College is a meal being prepared. From discussion on what is to be served, identifying the ingredients to going out shopping and in this sense finding the funding, to meal preparation, cooking and then the final presentation. You all have been a part of our expanded culinary and baking program. Thank you,” she said.

Okada also recognized the contributions of the college’s culinary instructors, referring to them as “superstar chef instructors.” This group includes Chefs Kennylyn Miranda, Paul Kerner, and Bertrand Haurillon, along with the GCC ProStart chef instructors, who play a critical role in training the next generation of chefs on the island.

The event was also attended by Governor Lou Leon Guerrero, who expressed pride in the advancements on the GCC campus. “When you drive into the GCC campus, you see progress, excellence, and quality. I see many advances in all aspects of our sectors in life,” he stated. The governor emphasized the cultural significance of food, noting its role in fostering friendships and economic growth. “This is not just about a ribbon cutting for a facility; it is about a ribbon cutting that is so essential to continuing our lives here on Guam,” he added.

The renovation was funded through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund and the Governor’s Education Stabilization Funds, reflecting a commitment to enhancing educational resources in the region. As GCC continues to expand its culinary programs, this new facility is expected to play a vital role in meeting the growing demand for skilled professionals in the culinary arts sector.
