Great Bend High School Launches E-Sports Team for Students

Great Bend High School (GBHS) has officially launched an E-Sports Team, a significant addition that aims to provide students with a new avenue for engagement and competition. The decision was made during a meeting of the USD 428 Board of Education on Wednesday. This initiative, proposed by Athletic & Activities Director Matt Westerhaus, along with Coach Jake Hofflinger and Assistant Coach Kindric Castro, aligns with the school’s commitment to student involvement and skill development.

The E-Sports program will operate under the framework of the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) and is set to begin immediately. Coach Hofflinger highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting that for 47% of E-Sports participants, this is their sole club or activity during high school. “It gives more students a place to belong, a community to engage with, and opportunities to develop valuable skills and positive peer interactions,” he stated.

Assistant Coach Castro brings a wealth of experience to the team. As a former member of the Barton Community College E-Sports Team and a two-time National Champion, he emphasized the skills gained through participation. “Being part of the E-Sports team at Barton helped me build career-ready skills—communication, teamwork, and problem-solving—that I still use every day in my work,” Castro explained. He shared insights about the types of games that will be played and the technical aspects of the tournament platform that students will use.

The establishment of the E-Sports Team builds upon the existing popularity of the E-Sports Club at GBHS, which has been active for several years. The newly sanctioned team will provide opportunities for students to compete at higher levels, connecting with peers not only across Kansas but also on a national scale. Westerhaus noted that logistics and schedules are still being finalized, as this is a new activity for KSHSAA. Currently, Garden City is the only other school in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) with a confirmed team.

Principal Brock Funke expressed his support for the new program. He remarked that the E-Sports initiative reflects the school’s mission to engage all students. “This is another way we can help every student find their place and pursue excellence in a positive, supportive environment,” Funke stated.

With strong leadership, a solid infrastructure, and considerable student interest, Great Bend High School is poised to enhance its offerings through the E-Sports Team. This initiative not only broadens the scope of student activities but also reinforces the school’s commitment to fostering a community where every student can thrive.
