Cullman City School Board Approves Key Contracts and Recognitions

The Cullman City School Board convened on January 20, 2024, to recognize outstanding educators and approve significant contracts aimed at enhancing student support services. The board’s meeting highlighted the achievements of local teachers and facilitated agreements that promise to bolster mental health and educational programs in the district.

During the meeting, the board celebrated the recent accomplishments of several educators who earned National Board Certification. Among the honorees were Nicole Heptinstall, Loren Heatherly, Hannah Hunt, and Tayler Davis, who received certifications in literacy. Additionally, Tasha Meyer was recognized for her certification as a library media specialist.

In a show of appreciation for exemplary teaching, Lacy Cameron from East Elementary School was named Elementary Teacher of the Year, while Michelle Greenlee from Cullman High School received the title of Secondary Teacher of the Year. These awards underscore the board’s commitment to recognizing excellence in education.

In a crucial step towards improving student mental health services, the board approved an interagency agreement with WellStone Inc. to provide outpatient and crisis mental health treatment for students from January to July 2026. This partnership is expected to enhance the support available to students facing mental health challenges.

Furthermore, the board sanctioned an independent contractor agreement with Howard Autism Learning Center LLC. This agreement aims to support behavioral and educational programs within the school system through August 2026. Such initiatives reflect the board’s dedication to addressing diverse educational needs.

The meeting also addressed the disposal of surplus music and art textbooks, along with obsolete handheld radios, as part of the consent agenda. Additionally, the board approved travel arrangements for Cullman High School students participating in spring semester athletic and fine arts activities.

Retirement was another topic of discussion, with the board accepting the retirement of Sharyn Hollingsworth, a teacher at West Elementary School. The board also approved the conditional employment of Samuel Mazzara and Logan Young for special education roles, signaling ongoing efforts to strengthen educational support for students with diverse needs.

Coaching supplements, long-term substitute appointments, and leaves of absence were also approved during the meeting, along with an Extended Day contract for Katie Smith.

The next regular meeting of the Cullman City School Board is scheduled for February 17, 2024, at 17:00 at East Elementary School. The meeting is anticipated to continue addressing key educational initiatives and community needs.
