A new satellite liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility is set to be constructed by Atlanta Gas Light in Lowndes County, near Valdosta. This development aims to bolster the region’s energy capacity and support ongoing industrial growth, particularly in sectors such as food production. The announcement was made by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Development Authority on February 13, 2026.
According to Niki Ogletree, president and CEO of the Development Authority, the establishment of this facility is crucial. She stated, “With the recent growth of both new and existing industries — particularly those involved in food production — having a satellite LNG facility is imperative to support expanded operations, including energy-intensive operations such as food processing and manufacturing.” This investment not only enhances the local infrastructure but also positions Valdosta-Lowndes County favorably for future industrial recruitment.
The facility, which represents a total investment of $50 million, is projected to create up to 90 jobs during its construction phase. Additionally, it will provide several highly skilled full-time positions once operational, generating approximately $531,528 in annual local tax revenue, as noted in the press release from the Development Authority.
Natural gas, when cooled to around minus 260 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 162 degrees Celsius), converts to a liquid form. This liquefied state allows it to occupy roughly 600 times less volume than its gaseous state, enhancing storage and transportation efficiency. The new facility will not only increase natural gas capacity for current customers but will also prepare for anticipated industrial growth in the region.
In a growing market like Valdosta, reliable access to natural gas is essential for smaller businesses and residents, who depend on it for cooking, heating, and water heating. Many major employers in the area also rely on natural gas, making dependable energy access a critical factor in business expansion and location decisions.
Market growth in the Valdosta area has nearly exhausted the available natural gas supply, prompting the need for this satellite LNG facility as an efficient and cost-effective solution to meet expected demand. Ogletree added, “Companies increasingly ask about natural gas availability as part of their location decisions. This facility will play a key role in attracting new industries that bring jobs to the area and support continued investment in our community.”
The significance of reliable energy infrastructure was echoed by Jason Shaw, chairman of the Georgia Public Service Commission. He stated, “Reliable energy infrastructure is fundamental to economic growth. The investments approved by the PSC, combined with Atlanta Gas Light’s ongoing infrastructure improvements, ensure Valdosta is prepared to meet growing demand from manufacturers, utilities, and residents alike.”
Since 2022, the Georgia Public Service Commission has approved more than $12 million to expand natural gas service for economic development projects in the Valdosta area. Concurrently, Atlanta Gas Light has invested over $4 million in regional natural gas infrastructure. With more than 65 economic development inquiries in recent years, the consistent availability of reliable energy remains a vital factor in fostering manufacturing growth and enhancing the long-term competitiveness of the community.
The satellite LNG facility will feature bulk LNG storage tanks, truck unloading infrastructure, interconnectivity with the Atlanta Gas Light distribution system, and comprehensive safety systems, including fire and gas safety measures. It is expected to become operational in 2027. As the region prepares for this significant development, local leaders remain optimistic about the future of Valdosta and its potential to attract additional industries.
