Hinsdale High School District 86 has appointed Chip Pettit as its new superintendent, marking the eighth individual to hold the position in just three years. This change comes at a time when the district has faced significant administrative turnover, with seven superintendents, including several interim leaders, stepping in during this period.
During a board meeting on March 15, 2024, Pettit expressed his commitment to providing stability for the district. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the frequent changes in leadership, stating, “Yes, I’m aware there has been quite a bit of turnover in the superintendent position. I don’t look at this as a short-term opportunity.” His contract, approved by the District 86 board, runs through June 30, 2029, and he will officially begin his role on July 1, 2026.
Pettit comes to District 86 from the Duneland School Corporation in northwest Indiana, where he has served as superintendent since 2019. Under his leadership, Duneland saw significant improvements in student performance, the implementation of a substantial capital improvement plan, and the execution of two strategic planning cycles. The District 86 board highlighted these achievements in their statement, noting that Pettit’s tenure has been marked by a focus on educational excellence.
“I come with an open mind and a passion for doing what’s best for kids,” Pettit remarked. He emphasized his eagerness to collaborate with staff and the community to maintain and enhance the district’s reputation for delivering a world-class education. “I look forward to building relationships with faculty, staff, and the community as soon as possible,” he added.
Pettit also expressed his admiration for District 86’s longstanding commitment to educational quality. He noted, “The well-established commitment from the community for students, teachers, and staff was certainly a highlight for me. I look forward to embracing the traditions that are unique to the district, while seeking out new opportunities in the spirit of student achievement.”
The District 86 board praised Pettit for his leadership skills and collaborative approach. “Dr. Pettit believes in strong relationships, collaboration, and will implement a clear vision to build upon D86’s tradition of excellence for all students,” they stated. His salary for the 2026-2027 contract year will be $300,000.
Brandon Kroft, president of the Duneland School Board, expressed his regret at Pettit’s departure, highlighting the positive impact he had on the district. Kroft noted, “During this time, Duneland student performance continues to be the leader in Northwest Indiana and amongst the highest in the state of Indiana.”
Pettit is not only a dedicated education professional but also a family man. He and his wife, Karen, have two children, one of whom is a recent college graduate and the other a current college senior. The transition to District 86 marks a significant chapter for Pettit as he seeks to establish a stable and productive environment for students and staff alike.
