The indie development team Big Distraction has launched an early access version of their new fantasy roguelike, titled LORT, on Steam. This game offers a unique twist on the genre, allowing 2-8 players to team up in a whimsical world filled with magic, goblins, and unexpected elements such as a giant crow riding a van. The aim is to loot, craft, and defeat various bosses while enhancing gameplay through a variety of upgrades.
The release comes as a response to the lack of similar titles since the success of Risk of Rain 2. According to a statement from Big Distraction, “We kept waiting for another Risk of Rain 2. It never came. So we quit AAA and made LORT.” The developers have crafted a game that features four procedurally generated biomes, a selection of playable adventurers, and nine different weapon types. The engaging gameplay is complemented by a roadmap that outlines future updates and community involvement.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
The developers have emphasized their commitment to engaging with players as they refine LORT. The early access approach allows for direct feedback, which will shape the game’s development moving forward. In upcoming updates, players can expect the introduction of new features including daggers, additional power-ups, and a novel “rogue” class resembling a frog-turned-assassin.
The roadmap also hints at an endless mode and various difficulty settings, catering to a broad range of player preferences. As the team expressed, “We have a lot of ideas for LORT. A lot. But while we like our ideas, we ultimately want to make what you and the rest of the community want.”
Player Reception and Gameplay Dynamics
Initial reactions to LORT on Steam have been mostly positive, with players praising its meta-progression and build potential. However, some users have noted that the game may not be ideal for solo play, as it lacks matchmaking features at this time. Many anticipate that improvements in this area will be included in future updates.
As for the meaning behind LORT, it remains a playful mystery. Some speculate it could reference a humorous take on loot mechanics, while others joke about its potential ties to popular culture. Current power-ups include whimsical names like “Trophy of Swole” and “Boomer’s Blessing,” adding to the game’s comedic charm.
With its unique approach to multiplayer roguelikes and an engaging development strategy, LORT is carving out a niche in the gaming landscape. As the community grows and evolves, players can look forward to an array of updates that promise to enhance the overall experience.
